Acim is an acronym for Addiction in My Life. It was written by Helen Schucman, who claims to have used the words of Christ to come up with the concept. As with many of the concepts and words used by authors like Albertosophy, Bob Proctor, and Father Chrysostom, Acim is often used in an extremely limited way as a term for a certain type of religious experience. It is also commonly used to mean "awakening" or "transforming."
A Course in Miracles is basically a meditation on the idea of atonement for our wrong doings. It's an easy read with many pages devoted to detailed descriptions of the process of consciousness emerging from a state of non-duality and reaching illumination. The basic premise is that the most wonderful "miracle" we can experience is the action of simply accepting the actions of another. Helen Schucman claims that this process is described in the Bible, and the entire process is revealed in the chapters of Acim.
It is my contention that there are three major differences between this book of Schucman and other "acim" books. First, it's important that at the end of the book, we have an immediate, conscious experience of the atonement. I call this the accreditation of the new thought.
Second, whereas in the works of many New Age teachers, concepts of "spiritual wapnick" or "ethereal body" are used to explain the mysteries of consciousness and the ego, the book of Helen Schucman "acimed" the concepts of spirit and the ego. Third, rather than teaching students how to experience the acim, Helen Schucman provides examples of actual crimes. At the end of the third chapter, a brief description of the acime process appears, followed by an explanation, as well as a suggestion for further reading.
The acimedictions in this text remind us that we live in a time of miracles. They also remind us that we must not allow our natural limitations to stop us from doing what we can for the sake of mankind's greatest gift, which is the ability to conceive and create new thought. If our current system of education were any different, we would not be having this discussion. We would simply be repeating tired old ideas about religion and spirituality.
I recommend the publication of this workbook and recommend that you take it with you to the store and purchase it as a handout. The purpose of this "go ahead, give it to me" kind of approach is that it will remind you to go ahead and do what you need to do to prepare for the day when you will receive your Holy Spirit to manifest your dreams and goals. If you want, you may even hold it over someone's head and ask, "Can you feel the Holy Spirit?" I have heard this approach work and those who were present when it did work told me that it was their favorite part of the session. The great thing about "The Acim," along with the other two worksheets in the book, is that they are all geared toward preparing you for the coming of the Holy Spirit, which means that you will have access to the supernal power that you need to enter into a meditative state where you will be able to experience the miracle of free being.
